The bulletin required repertoire selections change every four years. The repertoire in each class has some fluctuation, so while researching pieces you will encounter some pieces that are either easier or harder than others.
Alison Moris Piano Studio, has organized playlists of the reqired pieces. Have students listen at home or together at your lessons. Subscribe and like her YouTube channel for updates.
Publishers usually have a filter that shows you all of their music that is listed in the current NFMC, below are some links to preview a variety of the pieces online before you buy them.
When picking choice compositions it is important to read through the rules very carefully. There are the general rules regarding choice of material, and then there are specific rules regarding the choice pieces for each event found at the beginning of each event section in the bulletin.
Below are some helpful hints to consider when selecting your students Choice Repertoire.
Piano Solo Event Entrants must select a choice piece by a composer different from their required piece.
In the Piano Solo Event, the Elementary Piano Solo Class and above must have a choice piece by a foreign composer
There are NO arrangements, abridgments, transcriptions, or revisions permitted in the Piano Solo Event.
For the Piano Solo Event, the Choice piece MUST NOT appear anywhere in the bulletin.
Pre-Primary & Primary Piano Solo Event choice compositions must be at least twelve measures long, not including repeats. Beginning with Primary II classes all choice compositions must be at least 16 measures long not including repeats. Repeats should be omitted except in short primary compositions.
The Piano Solo Event has maximum time limits for choice compositions; 3 min for all Primary Classes, 5 min Elementary through Medium Classes, 6 min for Moderately Difficult through Difficult II Classes, 8 min Very Difficult through Musically Advanced II Classes
The Lynn Freeman Olson Piano Event entrants may pick a choice piece by an American or a foreign composer in all classes
SCJM students are permitted to alter all of the rules for choice pieces.
